George’s “Wild Radish”, Raphanus sativus

With only a few days left in February I’m way behind in posting about our February Calendar Flower - Wild Radish, Raphanus sativus.

Originally, I thought George had photographed this flower in New England. Now I’m not so sure, as my search shows it growing abundantly along the California coast. I also found that this pretty little Wild Radish is considered an invasive pest. It thrives in areas that have been disturbed by the creation of roads, trails, agriculture. The Raphanus sativus, is able to easily spread, crowding out Native plant species.

So I don’t know if George photographed the Wild Radish unaware that it was a pest, or whether he knew and still thought it a pretty little flower. It’s a mystery.

Best to move on from the Wild Radish, and think about approaching spring in the midwest! A little over a month and I’ll be able to plant the cultivated radish seeds in my garden!

Radish and Pea Toasts. Baguette slices toasted and spread with a mascarpone /mint and sprinkled with peas, chive, and radishes. One of my favorite tastes of spring!
