California Desert Bloom Season!

In the deserts of California it is time for spring wildflowers to bloom! When California experiences high rainfall in the winter, a Super Bloom of wildflowers will appear in the deserts and meadows in March to May. This has been a winter of low rainfall, so the spring bloom is less spectacular.

Here are some of George’s spring wildflower images to provide us with our own Super Bloom!

Panamint Daisies - Only found on the western slopes of the Panamint Mountain range in Death Valley, they bloom in April

“Bear Poppy” - Found in the Mojave and Death Valley. George photographed this Bear Poppy in Death Valley in a Super Bloom year. Decades can pass when Bear Poppies don’t bloom, as they need a very heavy winter rainfall.

Desert Globemallow is a plant that grows 3-5 feet tall and likes the California chaparral. The blossoms are less than an inch across and bloom in March and April.

Engelman’s Cactus in the Mojave, blooming March to May

And of course, our California Golden Poppies, that blanket grassy open spaces west of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in February through September.
